A key reason for the failure of Scott's expedition was the lack of food for the dogs towing the sledges. They were left behind, slowing the team's progress#Scott did not know of Amundsen's expedition (although Amundsen clearly knew about his) until after he had set out. The news was a severe blow to him#When Scott got to the South Pole, after Amundsen, he said of it: "Great God! This is an awful place"#As Scott's team ran out of food, one of them, Captain Oates, sacrificed himself for the good of the others, walking out of the tent to his death with the words "I am just going outside and may be some time"#Scott's final diary entry sums up the man. "I do not regret this journey, which has shown that Englishmen can endure hardships, help one another, and meet death with as great a fortitude as ever in the past"
